The Graduate School Graubünden (GSGR) is an institution of the Academia Raetica (ACAR), which provides various services for science (scientific services). It promotes the training, work and development of young scientists in Graubünden, strengthens research institutions through networking and cooperation and supports the canton in implementing its university and research strategy (H&FS 21.05.2015). Academia Raetica founded the Graduate School Graubünden in Davos in 2013. Together with other ACAR institutions, the GSGR carries out a performance mandate of the Canton of Graubünden.

ACAR and GSGR link and support scientific fields (research, higher education, and scientific services) which constitute a recognised, strong and growing pillar of economic and social development and innovation in Graubünden with national and international appeal.

a. The researchers in Graubünden (doctoral students, postdocs and young academic staff) work, learn and live under inspiring conditions which lead them to outstanding achievements and personal fulfilment in their professional, interdisciplinary and private development.

b. The diverse research institutions in Graubünden (research institutes, universities, clinics) cooperate profitably with each other and with scientific and entrepreneurial partners at various levels in order to find transdisciplinary (or interdisciplinary) well-founded answers to the challenges of our time.

c. The Canton of Graubünden (administration, parliament and government) has a well-founded network of research institutions which provides orientation for the substantial promotion and expansion of the sciences. In the public (media, people in Graubünden) a high acceptance of the scientific work results from this information.

d. The services of the GSGR strengthen the excellence of Graubünden as a research and training location in the thematic focus areas of the cantonal university and research strategy: tourism & business, resources & natural hazards, key technologies, culture and diversity, life science and computational science.

Within the framework of the «Vision» and «Mission» set out above and in compliance with the «Values», the GSGR pursues the following objectives:

Primary goals / Working method
a. Education and training, access to postgraduate courses and support for careers (skills, excellence)

  • Mediation and organization of need-based events to improve professional and interdisciplinary knowledge and skills (communication, methodological, social and personal competence)
  • Providing access to further studies and courses at universities, including bridging programmes (HTW > University)
  • Arrangement of additional funding opportunities for doctoral positions and Master’s theses in Graubünden

b. Information and support for young scientists (living and working in Graubünden, attractiveness of the location)

  • Information transfer on professional and private topics
  • Support, assistance and advice for newcomers
  • Providing access to central research infrastructures
  • Strengthening the activities of the supervisors

c. Visualisation of the value of scientific activities and achievements in Graubünden (public relations)

  • Offer of publication platforms (newspaper articles, digital media) for the institutions and their researchers
  • Writing and publishing own contributions
  • Participation and offer of events for the contact of researchers with the public

d. Promotion of scientific exchange, networking, cooperation between individuals, institutions, disciplines and with industry (synergies, innovation, attractiveness of location)

  • The conference «Graubünden forscht» is held on a regular basis
  • Launch of exchange platforms (meetings, visits, internships, networks, mentoring) for researchers
  • Initiation of cooperation between researchers and institutions (in the profile field, for cross-cutting topics, with universities, with industry)
  • Stimulating cooperation between research and industry

e. Support for the implementation and further development of the university and research strategy of the Canton of Graubünden (process support, policy dialogue)

  • Connection and process support of involved institutions in the preparation of performance mandates, special professorships and funding contributions
  • Networking to support the expansion, settlement and founding of scientific institutions
  • Coordination of stakeholder participation in the further development of the canton’s higher education and research strategy and in the allocation of funding

f. Articulation and representation of common positions of scientific institutions vis-à-vis politicians and administrations (representation of interests, formation of opinions)

  • Networking between researchers, research institutes, universities and government agencies (research funds, better framework conditions)
  • Contribution to issue management (political communication) of the scientific institutions and the cantonal administration
