COURSE OUTLINE Over the last decades, the speed and the value added of technological innovations have accelerated and keeping track gets ever more difficult. Technological innovations are not exclusively developed in industry but ever more in university environments.

Along with this on-going development, issues in intellectual property (IP) are becoming increasingly important for researchers in industry and universities alike. Some knowledge how to use the intellectual property systems for his/her own advantage is nowadays a necessity for avoiding pitfalls and unnecessary loss of time and money.

The one day workshop will provide the basics of intellectual property with a strong focus on patents, helping PhD students to take the step from scientific/technical ideas to innovations. At the end of this day, participants will understand the essentials of IP protection in general, patent law in particular, and challenges related to IP facing academics and spin-off companies.

Learning Objectives: Gains a sufficient understanding of copyright, industrial property rights, licensing as they apply to own research. Has a sufficient understanding on the role of patents in transfer of knowledge to the economy and society. Has sufficient knowledge how to extract the information needed for advancing the research as well as a basis for the own patent application.
TARGET AUDIENCEThis workshop is open to PhD students and any researchers from member institutions of Academia Raetica who are interested in this topic.
